Oakland Official Proposes to House the Homeless on a Cruise Ship

Oakland is tossing around a new idea to help with the homeless crisis...housing them on a cruise ship.

Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan says that she had mentioned exploring housing on a large ship at a previous city council meeting.

Since then, two cruise ship companies have contacted her about making it a reality, claiming that one ship could easily house up to 1,000 people.

Homeless advocate Needa Bee says Kaplan's heart is in the right place, but the council had passed a measure to use city owned property for permanent housing.

The Port of Oakland isn't wild about the idea either, releasing a statement:

"There isn't the infrastructure to berth a cruise ship. Safety and security issues at our federally regulated maritime facilities would make residential uses untenable."
