Metrolink Train Hits Vehicle in Santa Fe Springs; Four Injuries Reported

SANTA FE SPRINGS (CNS) - A Metrolink train crashed into an unoccupied motor home that apparently stalled on tracks in Santa Fe Springs today, resulting in four minor injuries to train passengers and interrupting some rail service, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. near Rosecrans and Marquardt avenues, according to Metrolink and the Whittier Police Department.

Scott Johnson of Metrolink said Orange County Line train 681, bound for Los Angeles, hit the motor home on the tracks. Buses were brought in to assist rail passengers, he said.

Whittier police Officer Hugo Figueroa said four people on the train complained of pain, but none was transported for hospital treatment.

Witnesses told police that the motor home apparently stalled on the tracks, and four people were seen running away, Figueroa said.

Officers went to the home of the registered owner, and the investigation was continuing, Figueroa said.

In the aftermath of the crash, Johnson had said the train was the first operating along the Orange County Line for the day, and rail service on that line “likely will not be available” all day.

However, about 9 a.m. Johnson said train service had resumed on the Orange County Line, but some residual delays were expected on that line and also on the 91/Perris Valley Line.

Johnson said that most rail crossings in Southern California have signs posted with a toll-free number that people can call to report stalled vehicles on tracks. People can also call 911, but it is sometimes faster to call the posted number, Johnson said.
