HOLLYWOOD (CNS) - Flowers will be placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star of Mexican singing star Jose Jose today, two days after his death in Miami at age 71 from pancreatic cancer.
Born Jose Romulo Sosa Ortiz Feb. 17, 1948, in Mexico City to a family of musicians, Jose Jose became known as “El Principe de la Cancion” (“The Prince of Song”) for his romantic ballads and gifted vocals.
He began serenading and playing guitar in his early teens, then later joined a jazz and bossa nova trio in which he sang and played bass and double bass.
In the early 1970s, he began a successful solo career that spanned more than 40 years, during which he was regarded as one of the most talented singers of Latin American popular music, with a vocal style that influenced many Latin pop artists.
His 1983 album “Secretos” was one of the best sellers in the history of Mexican music, with more than 11 million copies purchased worldwide. It also brought him the first of his six Grammy nominations.
Jose Jose sold out such venues as Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.
Jose Jose's career began to decline in the 1990s as his voice started to falter due to his alcoholism and health issues.
Jose Jose also appeared in several Mexican movies and television series.
Jose Jose's honors include Latin Grammy and Billboard Latin Music lifetime achievement awards and membership in Billboard's Latin Music Hall of Fame.
His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled in 2004.
