There are more So Cal wildfires in summer, but statistically October fires are the worse fires, burning at least 1/3 more total acreage on average. Dry air + dry brush + heat + wind = optimal fire weather.
According to Cal Fire ,the length of fire season is estimated to have increased by 75 days across the Sierras and seems to correspond with an increase in the extent of forest fires across the state. Most homes destroyed in wildfires are NOT in the direct path of the fire. 80% of homes begin to burn due to attic embers or radiant heat penetrating windows.
So it's time to protect your homes.
The House Whisperer suggests investing in fireproof vents, fire-glass windows, or window film.
When it comes to smoke alarms. There are a few guidelines to follow.
You need one in each bedroom, one in the hallway leading to bedrooms, and one on each floor unrelated to bedrooms.
Be sure your fire sprinklers are working and installed.
Houses equipped with both a sprinkler system and smoke alarms:
100 percent fewer deaths, 57 percent fewer injuries, considerably less property damage and 8 percent reduction in their homeowner's insurance premium.
Smoke detectors are still most important!
Approximately two-thirds of all fire deaths happen in homes.
