LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A bill intended to speed construction of housing for families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles was signed into law today by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
AB 1197 by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, will expand California Environmental Quality Act exemptions for emergency shelters and supportive housing projects in Los Angeles.
The bill will exempt funding actions carried out by Los Angeles for supportive housing and emergency shelters that are funded in part or in whole by Proposition HHH, Measure H, the No Place Like Home program, Homeless Emergency Aid Program and the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention program until Jan. 1, 2025.
“Homelessness is a humanitarian emergency that demands an urgent response and this law will help us turn blueprints into buildings more quickly for the shelter and supportive housing that unhoused people need now,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
