Britney Spears' Parents Appear in Closed Conservatorship Hearing

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Britney Spears' parents appeared on opposite sides of the counsel table in a closed court session today on issues regarding their daughter's conservatorship, which was established over the pop star in 2008.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda J. Penny granted a request by attorneys to close the courtroom to the public. They said they would be talking about matters involving the 37-year-old Spears' medical care, her two children and confidential business information.

A minute order from the hearing shed little light on what transpired during the session, which lasted about two hours, other than to say another session is scheduled in January.

Spears' court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham III, declined to comment after the proceedings.

The singer's mother, Lynne Spears, her father, Jamie, and her current temporary conservator, Jodi Montgomery, all were present for the hearing.

Montgomery has been the singer's care manager for about a year and was recently appointed by Penny to succeed the singer's father.

Meanwhile, outside the County Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, a group of fans gathered with signs asking that Spears' conservatorship, which they called ``abusive,'' be ended.

Davin Coffey, 30, of San Francisco, said he made his second trip from by Bay Area to protest the conservatorship, claiming it violates the entertainer's rights. He held a sign displaying photographs of many of those involved in the conservatorship, both within and outside the singer's family.

Spears has been under a conservatorship since 2008, when she began exhibiting bizarre behavior, such as shaving her head bald.

She was released this spring from a Los Angeles facility where she received treatment for undisclosed mental health issues, then took to Instagram to tell her millions of followers that while she appreciated their ``love and dedication,'' what she needed ``right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way.''
