Police in Virginia arrested a man who allegedly killed three people, including an infant child, in Keeling, Virginia.
According to EPSN, those killed were the wife, infant child, and mother-in-law of Tampa Bay Rays pitching prospect, Blake Bivens. Bivens pitches for the Montgomery Biscuits, the Class AA affiliate for the Tampa Bay Rays.
He found out about the tragedy just a few hours before he was scheduled to play a doubleheader in Tennessee.
Matthew Thomas Bernard, 18, has been arrested and charged with three counts of first degree murder.
Before his arrest, Bernard was considered 'armed and dangerous', and an intense manhunt was underway to find him. Eventually, police spotted Bernard, naked, running through the streets.
In video taken by witnesses, Bernard can be seen running naked toward an officer wearing tactical gear. At one point the officer sprays pepper spray at him, but it doesn't seem to faze him. Shortly after, Bernard runs up to a church groundskeeper at his car and put his hands around his neck. The officer swings his baton at Bernard and he let go and ran away.
A short time later, police later caught up with Bernard in a wooded area nearby and arrested him.
Bryant Bernard, told WSLS News that the suspect was his nephew. "In my wildest dreams. I never could have imagined it. Not him." saying Matthew was, "an all-around perfect kid."
Police have not commented on the possible relationship between Bernard and the victims, and have not revealed any motive.
Jenn Stallard, a cousin of Matthew Bernard told The Daily Mail that the murders were the result of his 'ongoing mental instability,' "Unfortunately, he was suffering with mental illness and came to a breaking point."
Condolences have poured in for Bivens, and both the Montgomery Biscuits and Tampa Bay Rays posted messages on social media.
An online fundraiser set up to help Bivens has already raised more than $30,000.
