LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A suspect in an allegedly stolen SUV led officers on a roughly hour long chase through South Los Angeles today before the red Kia Sorrento was rammed by a squad car, prompting the driver to surrender.
The chase began about 1:30 p.m. in the area of 55th Street and Avalon Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison.
The suspect drove north on the Harbor (110) Freeway, at several points coming to a stop before taking off again.
He later exited the freeway and began circling city streets in the area where the chase began. The suspect could be seen throwing items from the car, and at least twice he came to a stop to talk to homeless people who were cheering him on.
A PIT maneuver sent the Kia into a spin in the middle of an intersection, but the suspect drove on.
Soon after, the suspect began doing doughnuts in an intersection, at which point a police cruiser rammed the SUV broadside and pushed it into a parked vehicle.
The Kia's airbags deployed and the shirtless driver then climbed out of the driver's side window and was taken into custody about 2:25 p.m.
A man emerged from the parked vehicle and appeared to have sustained a minor injury, according to a report from the scene.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen out of South Los Angeles, Madison said.
