Lawmakers Aim To Force Presidential Candidates To Disclose Tax Returns

The California state Senate voted 27-10 on Thursday in hopes to force future presidential candidates to publicly disclose their tax returns. Under Senate Bill 27, anyone on the state's presidential primary ballot would have to release at least five years' of tax returns.

If the bill becomes a law, Trump could not appear on California's primary ballot scheduled for March 3, unless he files his returns with the secretary of state.

“We believe that President Trump, if he truly doesn’t have anything to hide, should step up and release his tax returns,” said Sen. Mike McGuire, a Democrat from Healdsburg and the co-author of the bill along with Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat.

Gavin Newsom's office did not comment on whether or not he would sign the bill.
