Report: California Holds Highest Number of Unsheltered Homeless in the U.S.

California is experiencing one of the worst homeless epidemics in the country. Rising housing costs and endless taxes are forcing people on the streets and pushing them to move out of state.

One of the worst areas experiencing homelessness is the Bay Area. Litter and poop covered streets drive residents crazy and the problem seems to be getting worse.

A new report revealed the Bay Area's homeless population is the third-largest in the country with more than 28,000 people across the nine-county region lacking housing, SF Gate reports.

Some startling numbers were also addressed in the report done by Bay Area Council: 67 percent of the homeless people in the Bay Area are unsheltered, compared to 26 percent in Chicago metro, 16 percent in Denver, 15 percent in Washington, D.C. metro and 5 percent in New York City.

Unsurprisingly, the only major city/ metro area with a higher percentage of homeless people without access to any shelter is Los Angeles, where 75 percent of the homeless are unsheltered.

The study states, "The size of the Bay Area's homeless population combined with the lack of shelter makes the region's homeless population more visible than elsewhere in the United States."
