Rain Expected Today, Cooler Temperatures Also Forecast

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - It is expected to be rainy with cool temperatures as a cold front moves through in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain could begin as early as this morning and continue into the afternoon, National Weather Service Meteorologist Kristen Stewart said.

Between .2 and 1/3-inch of rain was expected for the coast and inland areas and the foothills and mountains could see 1/3 to 3/4 of an inch, Stewart said. Some three to seven inches of snow could fall above 3,000 to 4,000 feet and drop to 2,000 feet as the day goes on, Stewart said.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-to-upper 50s along the coast and inland with 30s and 40s at higher elevations, she said.

“It will be really cold late Sunday,” she said. Temperatures in the 30s and 40s are forecast for coastal and inland areas and temperatures could dip below freezing in some areas. Higher elevations could see lows in the 20s.

No rain is expected Monday or Tuesday, she said. Showers return Wednesday and will likely continue into Thursday, Stewart said. They could be “more significant” than the weekend's rain, she said.

Rain is also expected today and Wednesday in Orange County.

Los Angeles County health officials are urging swimmers and surfers to steer clear of water near storm drains for a few days. The beach water use advisory was in effect until at least 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“Avoid swimming, surfing and playing in ocean waters around discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers,” Dr. Muntu Davis said. “Bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas are likely to contaminate ocean waters in and around these outlets after a rainfall.”

For updated beach conditions, call the county's 24-hour hotline at (800) 525-5662 or visit publichealth.lacounty.gov/beach/ .
