As the federal government shutdown drags on, new California Governor, Gavin Newsom says the state will offer unemployment benefits to federal employees who are working without pay, according to CBS.
This past week, Newsom met with TSA workers at the Sacramento airport to get a better understanding of how the shutdown is affecting the agents. Most of the agents told him they are struggling to live without their paycheck. So, here comes Gavin Newsom riding in on his white horse for the rescue.
Newsom announced Californians working for the federal government will be eligible for pay despite the U.S Department of Labor telling states that people working without pay are ineligible for unemployment benefits. But of course, since Newsom believes he's above the rules and can do whatever he wants, he's gone ahead with his proclamation, despite the federal agency referring to specific guidelines from a 2013 shutdown.
Of course, because things aren't going his way, Newsom called the federal push-back "jaw-dropping." He says the employees who receive the temporary benefits will be expected to reimburse the state back once the shutdown is over.
