LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A suspect who allegedly pushed a teenager onto Metro Red Line tracks in downtown Los Angeles and got into an altercation with some construction workers nearby suffered a medical emergency while being detained and is believed to have died at a hospital.
According to police, the 14-year-old victim was pushed onto the tracks at a Red Line station at Fifth and Hill streets around 9:15 a.m. The teen, who suffered only a minor injury, was able to get off the tracks, officials said. There was no train at the station at the time.
The suspect was taken into custody a short time later at Fifth and Flower streets, police said. NBC4 reported from the scene that the suspect got into an altercation with some construction workers, who held the suspect until police arrived.
According to the station, the suspect -- a transient -- went into cardiac arrest while being detained and later died.
Police would not immediately confirm the suspect's death. Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said paramedics took a person who was being detained at Fifth and Flower streets to a hospital in unknown condition.
