LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County rose to 4.6 percent in September, up from a revised 4.5 percent in August, the state Employment Development Department reported today.
The September unemployment rate was slightly above the rate in the same month a year ago, when it was also 4.5 percent.
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the September unemployment rate was 2.8 percent, down from 3.1 percent in August.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for California was 4.1 percent in September, down from 4.2 percent in August and below the 4.5 percent rate from September 2017. The comparable estimates for the nation were 3.7 percent in September, 3.9 percent in August and 4.2 percent in September 2017.
According to the EDD, total nonfarm employment increased in Los Angeles County by about 21,600 jobs between August and September to reach more than 4.5 million. The government and educational/health services sectors led the way in adding jobs, thanks to the start of the school year.
About 236,000 people were unemployed in September in Los Angeles County, which has a work force of more than 5.1 million.
