LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A man climbed a barbed-wire fence today at Los Angeles International Airport and approached a jetliner preparing for takeoff before he was quickly taken into custody.
The incursion was reported about 1:40 p.m., when an airport police officer saw the man, who scaled a perimeter fence, running across a runway, officials said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, approached a Delta jet staging for departure and was taken into custody within a few minutes, according Airport Police Officer Rob Pedregon.
Mechanics did a quick precautionary inspection of the plane, which was then cleared for departure.
A search of the airport perimeter was concluded soon afterward and normal airport operations resumed by 2 p.m., Pedregon said.
The man was detained for interviews by airport police and the FBI and would likely be booked on suspicion of trespassing and possibly other offenses, the officer said.
A mental health evaluation was also likely, Pedregon said.
