Lower Temperatures Forecast for the Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Heat advisories for most of Los Angeles County expired at 8 p.m. tonight with the National Weather Service forecasting a cool down over the weekend.

A combination of monsoonal moisture and very warm ocean temperatures is expected to bring another round of very warm minimum temperatures Friday night, with the Los Angeles Basin and many valley areas remaining above 70 degrees, according to the weather service.

A 20 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast by the weather service for Saturday afternoon and evening across the Los Angeles/Ventura County mountains and Antelope Valley.

Saturday's forecast highs in Los Angeles County include 98 in Woodland Hills, 94 in Pasadena, 93 in Saugus, 92 in San Gabriel, 91 in Burbank, 88 in downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach, and 81 at Los Angeles International Airport.

A beach hazards statement for minor coastal flooding was issued for the Los Angeles County coast through Saturday evening. Minor coastal flooding is possible over low-lying coastal areas such as beach parking lots and harbor walkways. No significant damage is expected.

Dangerous rip currents are likely on beaches exposed to the higher surf.

Orange County forecast highs for Saturday include 92 in Mission Viejo, 91 in Fullerton and Yorba Linda, 90 in Irvine, 89 in Anaheim, 84 in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, 81 in San Clemente.

Friday's highs in Los Angeles County included 99 in Lancaster, 97 in Palmdale and Pomona, 95 in Pasadena, 94 in Saugus, 93 in downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach Airport, 90 at Getty Center and Torrance, 89 in Hawthorne, 88 in Culver City and UCLA, 87 at Los Angeles International Airport, 86 at Santa Monica Airport and 85 in Redondo Beach.

San Fernando Valley highs included 97 in Chatsworth and Woodland Hills, 96 in Northridge and Van Nuys and 93 in Burbank.

Friday's Orange County highs included 96 at Yorba Linda, 94 at Fullerton Airport, 93 in Lake Forest, 92 in Santa Ana, 89 at John Wayne Airport, 87 in Laguna Beach, 86 in Huntington Beach and 82 in Newport Beach.

Highest minimum temperature records for this date were set in Santa Ana, 73, breaking the previous record of 70 set in 1998, and 72 in Newport Beach, breaking the previous record of 71 set in 1983.

Before dawn Friday, the weather service issued heat advisories, which are a little less serious than the excessive heat warnings that were in effect in most of Los Angeles County this week. They were for the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, and the Los Angeles coastal zone, which consists of beach cities, metropolitan Los Angeles, the downtown area and Hollywood Hills.
