SHERMAN OAKS (CNS) - Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, issued a blistering criticism of President Donald Trump today to mark the first anniversary of Sherman filing articles of impeachment against the president on the floor of the House of Representative.
“A year ago, today, I filed articles of impeachment against Donald J. Trump, the first attempt to force the House Judiciary Committee to hold hearings on obstruction of justice and Russian interference in our election,” Sherman said in a statement, noting that Rep. Al Green, D-Texas co-sponsored the articles.
“Democrats, Republicans, and the entire world are shocked by the latest example of America's amateur president -- ignorance accompanied by a refusal to learn, and a lack of impulse control, plus a refusal to have his staff control his impulses. We're no longer surprised by any action, no matter how far below the dignity of the office and no matter how dangerous to the country.”
Sherman said that “the president must be held accountable under the law, through the impeachment process and the special counsel's inquiry, for his actions and for this unprecedented level of corruption. I will continue my effort to force the House Judiciary Committee to hold hearings on Obstruction of Justice and Russian interference in our election.”
House Resolution 438 -- the articles of impeachment -- accuses Trump of abusing his power by attempting to halt the ongoing investigation into his campaign's alleged collusion with Russian government officials. It specifically cites Trump's alleged attempt to stop an investigation into Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser, and Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.
At the time, the White House blasted Sherman's move.
“I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst,” said Sarah Huckabee Sanders, then deputy White House press secretary.
