Sunday, July 15, will be the last day that the two California National Guard armories being used as night shelters fro homeless people in Orange County will remain open. The county was allowed to do this because of a 90-day summer extension and now they have no additional emergency shelter set to open anytime soon.
Homeless people will be allowed to use the Fullerton armory sleeping quarters until Thursday morning because the military needs the space for upcoming drills. They will then be transferred to the Santa Ana armory on Flower Street, which will only provide them shelter through Sunday night.
The military facilities typically remain open under a county-operated program during the winter through April as a night-only shelter.
Gov. Jerry brown and the California Military Department granted the summer extension after receiving pressure from a federal judge over the lack of proper shelter for Orange County's homeless population.
Outreach workers will be available at the Santa Ana armory from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday to discuss "options" and what to do now with all the homeless people who used the space.
