The fate of millions of illegal immigrants will be in the hands of House Republicans next week. The GOP has reached a deal to vote on two immigration bills next Wednesday morning that covers the issues of legalization of "Dreamers" and how to stiffen border security.
This will be the first time since 2010 that Republicans took control of the chamber and have put a major legalization bill on the floor.
“Members across the Republican Conference have negotiated directly and in good faith with each other for several weeks, and as a result, the House will consider two bills next week that will avert the discharge petition and resolve the border security and immigration issues,” AshLee Strong, Speaker Paul D. Ryan's spokeswoman, said.
Both sides of the moderates and conservatives seem to agree on granting some form of more-permanent legal status to Dreamers, the young adult illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Those that signed up for DACA, those who did not sign up but are eligible and those who were aged in will be protected.
There is still ongoing negotiations about whether that includes full citizenship rights, what that means for their parents who broke the law to bring the DACA kids to the U.S., and what other restrictions will be added to the immigration process.
“We still don’t have an agreement, but you have seen members from a lot of different sides of this issue come together in a real committed way to try to find an agreement,” Majority Whip Steve Scalise said Tuesday evening. “We are going to keep working at it.”
President Trump is reportedly excited about the plan.
