#TechTalk: Netflix Knows All About You And There's Nothing You Can Do

Alright, so while you are still freaking out about Facebook and Amazon and everyone else having all of your information, we have another one to add to the list... Netflix.

Yep.

Netflix knows all about you and (get this) there's nothing you can do about it.

Dunh! Dunh! Dunnnhhh!!!

Netflix has 118 million subscribers across the world and they are collecting data on all of them.

Some of the information is simply given by you:

  • name
  • address
  • email
  • payment method
  • phone number
  • content ratings

Other stuff they collect automatically:

  • platforms used
  • IP address
  • watch history
  • search history
  • time spent watching

Plus, they use typical stuff like demographic info, interest-based data, and Internet history.

Now, Netflix does share your data "for limited purposes," but they don't sell your info.  "Our business is a subscription service model that offers personalized recommendations to you, to help you find shows and movies of interest to you."

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about any of that right now.  All their data collection is pretty standard stuff, so there's really nothing there.  When it comes to the info they have gathered on you, you can look at what they have, but you can't download it.  That may change in the future, but that's what it is at the moment.
