Santa Ana Homeless Can Stay in Hotels on a Case-by-Case Basis

Last week, the 30-day voucher allowing the 700 homeless people removed from the Santa Ana Riverbed in Anaheim to live in hotels expired. However,  advocates have complained that some people have no good place to go.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer said that many homeless have opposed receiving assistance. "We have that finite group of about 250 who have somehow someway indicated they do not want services."

Supervisor Sean Nelson adds "The fact that someone isn't housed doesn't mean they weren't given options, that doesn't mean they weren't given good options."

Orange County Supervisors say some homeless people will be allowed to stay in motel rooms a little longer on a case-by-case basis. As for the future, most people have been offered social services and shelter options.

Orange County Supervisors are to put up temporary shelters for the homeless people with sites located in Irvine, Huntington Beach, and Laguna Niguel. Supervisor Sean Nelson says the shelter beds could be ready in about a month.

The shelters will have between one and two hundred beds.

Supervisor Andrew Do, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, says "my proposal is to limit capacity at the Irvine location to 200 individuals, Huntington Beach to 100 and Laguna Niguel to 100."

The tent structure next to Great Park in Irvine will accept homeless people until it fills to capacity. "The Irvine location will be first, once the 200 capacity is met then individuals will be referred to the Huntington beach location."
