Flippy The Robot Takes A Break For Upgrades

The rise of the robots has been momentarily delayed.

According to a report in USA Today, the bot, which made its debut last week at a CaliBurger location in Pasadena, has proven to be so popular, it's being taken offline for some upgrades which will be installed over the weekend.

According to a spokeswoman with Miso, the company is performing tests on the robot to "make sure the location can fulfill a large number of orders."

Flippy is heading back to work next week, but for a limited three hour shift between 11 am and 2 pm (everyone needs help during the lunch rush, even robots).

Flippy still needs a lot of help from his human counterparts - including placing cheese on the burgers, assembling the burger, and taking orders. In all honesty - Flippy is more of an automated spatula than a any kind of real chef. But the burger terminator uses machine vision to locate the patties on the grill, time how long each one has been cooking, and flip them at the perfect moment.

CaliBurger says they plan on installing Flippy at fifty locations across the United States.

So while Skynet's rise has been delayed somewhat, it's proof that robots will eventually take over one burger at a time.
