Split Second Thinking

Posted May 9th, 2014 @ 10:21am

Sometimes you only have a split second to think.  And it doesn't always go well.

Yesterday on the Thompson and Espinosa show I read a story about the California legislature moving forward with a bill to stem the theft of smartphones. It was a last minute thing I threw in the newscast without proofreading.

Below is the story:

California lawmakers have advanced a bill that would require electronics manufacturers to install a shut-off function in all smartphones as a way to deter what one senator called a crime wave of thefts. The legislation by Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco passed the Senate 26-8 today. The bill now goes to the Senate.

As I read the last word in that last line, my brain said to me "Uh, how is the bill going from the Senate to the Senate?" And my brain said back to me "Maybe it went from a committee to the full Senate." For a split second that made sense until my brain continued "There ain't no committee with 34 Senators in it. And how many Senators does California have anyway? Forty, right? But don't we have a vacant seat?"

I finally figured it out once I had a chance to think for a couple of seconds.  And then a listener sent me this video.
