29-year-old aspiring pastor Matthew Phelps has been charged with murdering his wife, after he claimed he took too much cough medicine before finding her fatally stabbed beside him.
Phelps called 911 on Friday just after 1 a.m. to report that he had killed his wife Lauren Phelps, also 29, at their home in Raleigh, North Carolina:
"I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor. There’s blood all over me, and there’s a bloody knife on the bed. I think I did it. I can’t believe I did this."
Phelps said he took Coricidin, a cough and cold medicine, because it made him "feel good" and because he couldn't sleep at night.
According to social media, the couple had only been married since last November. Phelps, who worked at a landscaping company, was studying to become a pastor while his wife was a Sunday school teacher.
Phelps has been charged with murder and is being held without bail.
