California has spent $449 million over the course of 7 years to get people to buy zero-emission cars. But the subsidies haven't done much to help, people just aren't buying electric cars yet.
Last year of the 2 million cars sold in the state, just 75,000 of them were pure-electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Currently, there are just 315,000 electric or hybrid cars registered in the state out of 26 million cars and light trucks.
That's a pretty small number, but the state is still pushing forward in its fight to save the world so it's pushing a bill that would boost the rebate program from $449 million to $3 billion.
