Irvine Residents Protest Homeless Move

Irvine Residents fight back against proposed homeless camp

Irvine residents flooded City Council chambers on Tuesday to try and fight back against a proposed move of homeless residents to a shelter in Irvine located near a school.

Organizers of the protest stood outside City Hall Tuesday chanting, "All our kids deserve better!" while the council met to research using county-owned land in Irvine, Huntington Beach, and Laguna Niguel to temporarily house the 700-odd homeless people who were evicted from the Santa Ana riverbed back in February.

An initial proposal called for housing 200 individuals on the property, with the rest going to camps in cities like Laguna Nigel and Huntington Beach. The city council rescinded that vote last month after a huge public outcry over the plan.
