LOS ANGELES (AP) — Children and young adults who forget to return their library books on time will no longer be on the hook for fines at Los Angeles County libraries.
The Los Angeles Times reports that county supervisors last week did away with late fees for people under the age of 21. Young people who accrued fees before the new policy took effect can eliminate them under a separate program that gives them credit for reading.
For every hour spent reading at a county library, $5 in fines are wiped away.
Darcy Hastings, a county library official, said the county has cleared 3,500 blocked accounts since the "Read Away" program began on June 1.
