Times Square Ball Gets New Additions Before New Years Eve Ceremony

The ball dropping ceremony in Times Square has been a famous tradition for many Americans since it started back in 1907. But this year, the ball is getting a bit of a 'face lift'...

The ball is a 12,000-pound sphere, and was already home to 2,600 Waterford Crystals. But when the ball drops in Times Square to ring in 2019, the sphere will have even more crystals on it. 192 to be exact.

Workers are currently adding the additional crystals to the ball, all in celebration of this year's "Gift of Harmony" theme. They're even adding rosette cuts, to give the appearance that they harmonically flow into each other.

"At Waterford, we’re excited to celebrate and embrace the gift of harmony and look forward to all that is to come in 2019,” said Michael Craig, president of Waterford Americas.

On New Year's Eve, the ball is set to be hoisted into place at 6 p.m. It will begin its one-minute decent at 11:59 p.m. Organizers expect this year's crowd to exceed one million.
