The US advises tourists to stay away from this well-known location. The Dominican Republic has seen a sharp increase in crime, prompting the U.S. Department of State to issue a travel alert advising citizens to stay away from the nation.
“The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale,” the advisory reads. As a result, the Dominican Republic has seen increases in its number of murders, sexual assaults, and armed robberies, the department reveals.
The Department of State also advises visitors to the nation to travel in groups, avoid carrying any valuables, stay alert at all times, and cooperate completely if they are robbed.
