The city of Denver is donating dozens of bison to local Native American tribes.
- The first 17 bison were shipped off to tribal lands in Colorado, Wyoming, and Oklahoma, where they will establish new herds.
- The animals come from conservation herds managed by the Denver Zoo, descended from the last wild bison in North America.
- The goal is to return stewardship of bison herds to Native American tribes, after the animal was nearly driven to extinction in the 19th century.
