Puerto Rico Struggles After Fiona

Authorities are struggling to reach people impacted by Hurricane Fiona, which has smacked the U.S. territory causing power outages and historic flooding.

  • Government officials are working with religious groups, nonprofits and others to brave landslides, mud and broken asphalt on foot to provide food, water and medicine for people in need.
  • They are having trouble clearing paths so vehicles can enter isolated areas though.
  • Nino Correa, commissioner for Puerto Rico’s emergency management agency, says at least six municipalities across the island had areas that were cut off by Fiona, which struck as a Category 1 hurricane and was up to Category 4 Wednesday as it headed toward Bermuda.
