Sam Van Aken is an award-winning contemporary artist and Syracuse University art professor.
Van Aken created the Tree of 40 Fruits as part of an ongoing series of hybridized fruit trees. Aken did this through the process of grafting.
Grafting is when a technique where tissues of plants are joined together. One plant is selected for its roots, the other for it's stems, leaves, flowers or fruits.
The Tree of 40 Fruits has over forty different types of stone fruit. It took about five years the tree accumulated branches from forty different "donor" trees, each with a different fruit, including apricot, cherry, nectarine, almond and different types of plums.
Pretty, pretty cool.
Here is a little tutorial on grating a tree of many fruits. Best of luck gang. Send us pictures.
