Governor Gavin Newsom's budget proposal of $291.5 billion was unveiled today, and it has already been met with criticism. Vince Fong, Vice Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, issued a statement expressing his concerns.
Fong believes that the Governor and legislative Democrats have been spending recklessly for years, which has resulted in billions of dollars of new ongoing costs. He argues that until the Governor takes control of the unsustainable spending, it is too early to tap into the Rainy Day Fund.
According to Fong, Newsom has failed to address the state's energy sector and infrastructure needs, resulting in higher gas prices and a lack of new water storage. He urges the Governor to declare a fiscal emergency and hold a Special Session to address the state's fiscal crisis and protect the most vulnerable Californians from further harm.
