An island between the U.S. and Mexico left unclaimed by either nation has been taken over by Mexican cartel gangs as a base of operations. Fronton Island is now in the control of the Gulf Cartel and Cartel Del Nostre and they use the area as a safe haven. A retired Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper, Jaeson Jones says migrants are crossing into the U.S., through Fronton Island, and cartel members are using the high volume of migrants to sneak into the U.S. among crowds of people.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott says that Fronton Island is actually Texas territory so the DPS plans to patrol the island as if it's an active warzone. Authorities say they will attempt to secure the area, but it may be an ongoing issue indefinitely.
