The suspect accused of murdering Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer appeared in a courtroom today and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Last week 29-year-old Kevin Cantaneo Salazar allegedly shot and killed Clinkunbroomer in an unprovoked attack while the deputy was in his patrol car. He was arrested earlier this week at his home where police found several guns. Police say Salazar has already confessed to the ambush murder.
The man's family says he has been suffering from ongoing mental health issues including schizophrenia and hearing voices in his head. They say he should still face consequences for his actions but blame his mental health issues as the reason why he committed the murder. Salazar is being held without bail.
