Since 2010 the San Francisco area has seen a steady rise in car break-ins. Bay Area break-ins are far more frequent when compared to the rest of California and there is a pretty long history of people getting their stuff stolen when their car is parked on the street. Even in 1988, San Francisco had experienced twice the rate of car break-ins compared to the rest of the state. Police say thieves often look for specific targets like rental cars that are being used by unsuspecting tourists. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, less than 1% of car break-in crimes are solved and the fact that so few get caught for the crime could be a contributing factor to the consistent rise. Criminals in the Bay Area are also using devices to find Bluetooth-enabled electronics in cars so they can target them.
