Police in Fort Lauderdale arrested nine people caught looting a store in the middle of Hurricane Irma's heavy rain and winds.
Local 10 abc caught the looters taking items from a Foot Locker and from Cash American Pawn store. Fort Lauderdale police Chief Rick Maglione said:
"Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life choice. Stay home and look after your loved once and be thankful they are all safe."
Six adults and three teenagers were arrested:
- Kenneth Pinkney
- Zara Dumornay
- Tyrell Pratt
- Teonhki Robinson
- Michael Brown
- Rossano Henry Jr.
They all face charges of burglary during a natural disaster. Immediately after Local 10's report, The Broward Sheriff's Office posted this to Twitter:
"ATTENTION LOOTERS; Every incident will be investigated. Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact."
The Pembroke Pines Police Department also put out a warning:
"Any looters who come to Pembroke Pines will be greeted by our officers. Choose wisely and stay home."
