Supreme Court Allows Transgender Military Ban To Take Effect

US-POLITICS-COURT-NOMINATION

The United States Supreme Court will allow the Pentagon's ban on transgender people from serving in the military to remain in effect while the issue is decided by the lower courts. The ruling overturns an injunction by a district court while the case makes it way through the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Court's decision is a partial win for the Trump Administration. While they got the national injunction against the policy overturned, the Justice Department had asked the Supreme Court to bypass the lower courts and rule on the merits of the case, but that request was denied.

Supreme Court Justices have a history of being selective with the cases they hear and usually prefer to have them make their way through the lower court systems before deciding if they will take them up. They almost only take on cases in which the lower courts could not agree on a decision.
