LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A 40-year-old man who was allegedly armed with a knife, confronted police officers responding to a mental health call on the outskirts of Koreatown and was fatally shot was identified Friday.

The victim was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office as Yong Yang.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday at an apartment in the 400 block of South Gramercy Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, which initially said officers responded to a report of a "violent male."

Police subsequently said officers were called to meet Department of Mental Health workers at the apartment, and when they arrived, they were met by Yang, who was armed with a knife, prompting at least one officer to open fire, striking Yang.

Yang was pronounced dead at the scene, and a knife was recovered. No details were released on exactly what occurred to prompt the shooting.

Yang's relatives were visibly distraught at the scene following the shooting. His brother told KCAL9 that his parents called authorities because Yang was having a mental health crisis. He said mental health workers were already at the scene when police arrived, but officers confronted Yang without their assistance.

No officers or bystanders were injured, police said.
