A man armed with a knife was killed during a shooting involving a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy at the Long Beach-Bellflower border, and authorities Wednesday are continuing their investigation of the shooting.

Deputies from the Lakewood Station were called at 9:13 p.m. Tuesday to the 15900 block of Indiana Avenue in Paramount regarding a restraining order violation call. Upon their arrival, they spoke to the victim and observed the suspect drive past the residence, but lost sight of him shortly thereafter, the sheriff's department said.

As they searched for the suspect, deputies saw him driving east on Artesia Boulevard in Long Beach, approaching Downey Avenue. The suspect was stopped in his vehicle at the intersection and as deputies pulled in behind him, the suspect placed his vehicle in reverse, deliberately accelerated and crashed into the front end of the patrol unit, said homicide Lt. Mike Gomez.

The suspect then exited his vehicle armed with a knife and charged at the deputies, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting, authorities said.

Television video showed the suspect's vehicle on top of the deputy's patrol car at the scene.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately known how the deputy was injured.

The deputy was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition.

The intersection of Downey Avenue and Artesia Boulevard will be closed while deputies examine the scene for possible evidence and look for any surveillance video at the scene, CBS 2 reported.

Anyone with information about this shooting was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or sent to lacrimestoppers.org.
