LONG BEACH (CNS) - City health officials Monday marked the beginning of Long Beach Walk to School Week in an effort to highlight the benefits of physical activity while also emphasizing pedestrian safety and easing traffic congestion near schools.
"We're excited to celebrate another year of walking to school," city Director of Health and Human Services Alison King said in a statement. "Walking is great for both physical and mental health. Starting your day by walking with friends can help build a strong sense of community."
The theme of this year's Walk to School Week is "Walking with Sunshine." Health officials said it is meant to stress the importance of wearing bright colored or reflective clothing while walking to be more visible to motorists.
Health officials said the city has been working with Long Beach Unified School District to provide students and families with information promoting physical activity and ways to safely walk to school campuses. The city also plans to post regular tips and other messages of encouragement on its social media channels throughout the week.
The city also plans to stage several "pop-up activities" to encouraging walking and pedestrian safety.
