LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Authorities have arrested a Los Angeles couple in Mexico in connection with a freeway shooting in the East Los Angeles area in December that left two men wounded, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.
Lorraine Covarrubias, 23, and Robert Sarabia, 25, were arrested on Feb. 21 for their alleged involvement in the shooting that occurred on Dec. 19 shortly before 5 a.m. on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway east of Soto Street, according to the CHP.
"CHP personnel and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene and located a white Honda accord along the right shoulder," a CHP statement said.
"Emergency personnel discovered two male adult victims located within the Honda accord, (and) both had sustained gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment," the CHP reported.
Detectives assigned to the CHP's Major Crimes Unit were assigned to the investigation.
"The subsequent investigation identified Covarrubias and Sarabia as suspects in the shooting and warrants were obtained for their arrest," the CHP said. "Through further investigation, information was obtained indicating the two suspects fled the country on Dec. 23, 2023.
"In collaboration with multiple allied agencies, the suspects were arrested in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico ..." the statement continued.
The suspects were extradited back to the United States via the San Ysidro Port of Entry. CHP personnel took them back to East Los Angeles, where they were booked into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's East LA station.
Covarrubias faces possible charges of attempted murder and Sarabia faces charges of accessory after the fact and an unrelated no-bail warrant.
Also involved in the investigation were personnel from the U.S. Border Patrol, CHP Mexico Liaison Unit, U.S. Marshals Task Force, and Mexican authorities.
