SANTA ANA (CNS) - A charter school in Santa Ana was locked down Thursday after a student showed a classmate a toy gun in class, triggering a heavy police presence around the school across from the federal courthouse.
A Nova Academy Early College High School student brought the toy to school and showed it to a classmate, and another student who saw that alerted a teacher, said Santa Ana police Officer Natalie Garcia.
The school was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon until authorities recovered the fake gun and detained the boy, Garcia said.
Nova Academy allows students to earn college credits while in high school.
