LOS ANGELES (CNS) - "Gran Turismo" opened with $17.3 million this weekend to lead all films at the North American box office -- a solid if not exactly roaring start for director Neill Blomkamp's version of the popular video game.
The film, which stars Jann Mardenborough as the real-life teenage video game player who becomes a professional race car driver, edged out "Barbie," which grossed $17.1 million in its sixth weekend in theaters, Comscore reported.
This weekend's initial box office estimates will be revised with final numbers Monday, and were affected by Sunday's National Cinema Day, in which ticket prices at many theaters were reduced to $4.
"Blue Beetle" was third after opening in first place last weekend, taking in $12.7 million Friday through Sunday.
"Oppenheimer" was fourth, grossing $9 million in its sixth week, followed by "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," which made $6.1 million in its fourth week.
"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" continue to rack up impressive cumulative totals, with director Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" surpassing $594 million domestically and $1.34 billion worldwide. Director Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has surpassed $300 million domestically and $777 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were "Meg 2: The Trench" ($5.1 million), "Strays" ($4.6 million), "Retribution" ($3.3 million), "The Hill" ($2.5 million) and "Haunted Mansion" ($2.1 million).
This weekend's overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $94.1 million. The year-to-date total is $6.622 billion -- an increase of 25% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
