CENTURY CITY (CNS) - The time-and-space-twisting film "Everything Everywhere All at Once" will carry a leading 14 nominations into Sunday's presentation of the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards, while ABC's critical darling "Abbott Elementary" tops the TV hopefuls with six nods.
"Everything Everywhere" will compete for best picture honors against a pair of Golden Globe winners -- "The Banshees of Inisherin," which won the Globe for best comedy/musical film, and "The Fabelmans," which was named best drama. Also up for the Critics Choice Association's prize for best picture are "Avatar: The Way of Water," "Babylon," "Elvis," "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," "RRR," "Tár," "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Women Talking."
Michelle Yeoh, also a Golden Globe winner, is nominated for best actress for her lead role as a universe-jumping mother in "Everything Everywhere All at Once." She will square off with fellow Globe winner Cate Blanchett of "Tár," Viola Davis for "The Woman King," Danielle Deadwyler of "Till," Margot Robbie for "Babylon" and Michelle Williams for "The Fabelmans."
Tom Cruise is up for best actor for his return to the role of a brash Navy fighter pilot in "Top Gun: Maverick." Brendan Fraser is also nominated for his critically acclaimed turn in "The Whale." Also nominated are Globe winners Austin Butler for "Elvis" and Colin Farrell for "The Banshees of Inisherin," along with Paul Mescal for "Aftersun" and Bill Nighy for "Living."
"Everything Everywhere" also has supporting-performance nominations for Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, along with nods for best director and original screenplay for the team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. It is also nominated for best acting ensemble, along with "The Banshees of Inisherin," "The Fabelmans," "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," "The Woman King" and "Women Talking."
On the television side of the awards, "Abbott Elementary" will compete for best comedy series honors against HBO's "Barry"; FX's "The Bear," "Better Things" and "Reservation Dogs"; CBS' "Ghosts"; HBO Max's "Hacks"; and Hulu's "Reboot."
Competing for best drama series will be AMC's "Better Call Saul," Disney+'s "Andor"; Apple TV+'s "Bad Sisters" and "Severance"; Netflix's "The Crown"; HBO's "Euphoria" and "House of the Dragon"; Paramount+'s "The Good Fight"; and Paramount Network's "Yellowstone."
"Abbott Elementary" has acting nominations for five of its performers -- Quinta Brunson for best actress in a comedy series and supporting nods for Chris Perfetti, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
A sentimental favorite in the supporting actor category will be the late Leslie Jordan for Fox's comedy "Call Me Kat." Jordan died Oct. 24 after suffering a medical emergency and crashing his car in Hollywood.
Along with Brunson, nominees for actress in a comedy are Christina Applegate for Netflix's "Dead to Me," Kaley Cuoco for HBO Max's "The Flight Attendant," Renée Elise Goldsberry for Peacock's "Girls5eva," Devery Jacobs for FX's "Reservation Dogs" and Jean Smart for HBO Max's "Hacks."
Vying for best comedy actor will be Matt Berry for FX's "What We Do in the Shadows," Bill Hader for HBO's "Barry," Keegan-Michael Key for Hulu's ` "Reboot," Steve Martin for Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," Jeremy Allen White for FX's "The Bear" and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai for FX's "Reservation Dogs."
Competing for best actress in a drama series will be Christine Baranski for Paramount+'s "The Good Fight," Sharon Horgan for Apple TV+'s "Bad Sisters," Laura Linney for Netflix's "Ozark," Mandy Moore for NBC's "This Is Us," Kelly Reilly for Paramount Network's "Yellowstone" and Zendaya for HBO's "Euphoria."
Bob Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul" is up for best actor in a drama series, along with Jeff Bridges for FX's "The Old Man," Sterling K. Brown for NBC's "This Is Us," Diego Luna for Disney+'s "Andor," Adam Scott for Apple TV+'s "Severance" and Antony Starr for Prime Video's "The Boys."
Bridges will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony. Bridges is a seven-time Oscar nominee, winning the best-actor prize in 2010 for his role as an aging country singer in "Crazy Heart." He earned acting nominations for his roles in "The Last Picture Show," "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot," "Starman," "The Contender," "True Grit" and "Hell or High Water."
His role in "Crazy Heart" also earned him Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit awards.
His other film credits include "The Fisher King," "Jagged Edge," "The Fabulous Baker Boys," "Seabiscuit" and "Iron Man."
Also during the ceremony, actress/singer Janelle Monáe will receive the organization's SeeHer Award, which honors a woman "who advocates for gender equality, portrays characters with authenticity, defies stereotypes and pushes boundaries." She starred last year in "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," and her other film credits include "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight." She is also an eight-time Grammy nominee, and was recently honored as Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year by The Trevor Project. She is also co-chair of When We All Vote, and she established the Fem the Future initiative aimed at empowering female filmmakers.
Kate Hudson, who also stars in "Glass Onion," will present her with the honor. Actress Michelle Pfeiffer will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Bridges.
Chelsea Handler will host the Critics Choice Award ceremony at the Fairmont Century Plaza.
