Gov. Gavin Newsom Hosts A "Candid Conversation" With California Mayors

On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom will host what he described in his State of the State address as a "candid conversation". It will be held at Long Beach City College and will address the high cost of housing in California.

Newsom will be joined by the mayors of other cities that have housing plans currently out of compliance with California law. According to an aide, he is expected to answer each mayors' questions.

Also in attendance will be top staff from the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency, and the Department of Housing and Community Development.

"If we want a California for All, we have to build housing for all," Newsom said in his State of the State address. "I want to support local governments that do what's right, like Anaheim and Santa Rosa. But there must be accountability for those that don't."

The state of California sued Huntington Beach just last month for allegedly 'blocking the production' of affordable housing units.

"There are 47 other cities across California that are not complying with their planning requirements in one way or another," Newsom said.

According to Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates, the city has been "complying with all applicable state housing and zoning laws and has been, and will continue to, work with the California Department of Housing and Community Development regarding meeting the city's Regional Housing Needs Assessment."
