Costa Mesa May Buy West 17th Street Property for Homeless Shelter

The Costa Mesa City Council is in talks of buying a property that could be used to house the homeless in the area.

They are also considering improving and expanding existing facilities for the homeless at Lighthouse CM Church of the Nazarene, which would operate for about nine months.

The industrial property up for grabs is at 1040 W. 17th St and would be used as a new shelter for long-term use. Both projects would cost the city $5.7 million.

Both locations are on the city’s west side and each would have about 50 beds. The new shelters come after the Santa Ana river bed was recently cleared of all homeless encampments.

Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley said in regards to the industrial building, "the goal will be that at the end of the day people won’t notice that it’s a homeless shelter."

The shelter would take clients by referral only and provide 24-hour staffing and security on site.

The growing homeless issue in Orange County seemed to be at the forefront of people's minds at city council meetings.

OC Councilman Allan Mansoor will join the show at 4:00 p.m with more.
