Trump Signs Executive Order to Keep Families Together

Families will no longer be separated at the border after getting caught crossing illegally thanks to the national outcry that put pressure on Republicans and sparked a political crisis. President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that will allow children to stay with their parents at detention centers for an extended period of time.

Trump said he wants to keep families together but will also continue to enforce the "zero tolerance policy" and keep border security.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said that the House will vote Thursday on legislation to allow families to remain together in Homeland Security custody throughout their legal proceedings.

“We do not want children taken away from their parents,” Ryan said. “We can enforce our immigration laws without breaking families apart.”

A 1997 order states that children cannot be detained for longer than 20 days with adults but in the House, GOP leaders worked to produce a revised version of the immigration bill that would keep children in detention centers longer than usually permitted and with their families.
