Alaska Airlines has partnered with Portland-based roaster Stumptown to create a custom blend of coffee that combats the negative effects of altitude on taste and smell during flights.
The blend is made up of a medium-dark base with added notes of marshmallow, brown butter, toffee, citrus oils, and cherry. It has been in development for a year and was taste-tested with creamer and Biscoff cookies to ensure the best combination.
The coffee will be exclusively served on every Alaska flight, replacing the airline's decade-long partnership with Starbucks.
While the custom coffee may not attract new customers, it aligns with Alaska's strategy of boosting businesses from the Pacific Northwest, such as Tillamook cheeses, Salt & Straw ice cream, and Straightaway canned cocktails.
