A recent study by Owl Labs discovered that American workers who have returned to the office full-time spend an average of $51 a day to be there totaling around $1,020 monthly. The cost breaks down to:

  • $16 on lunch
  • $14 on commuting
  • $13 on breakfast and coffee
  • $8 on parking

Those who own pets spend $20 more daily, totaling $71. However, employees with hybrid schedules only spend $408 monthly.

Frank Weishaupt, CEO of Owl Labs, stated that working from the office is "wildly more expensive" today than before the pandemic.

To make up for those expenses, workers are asking for additional perks and incentives from their employers, such as higher pay to cover commute expenses, better work/life balance, and better career opportunities.

If a company refuses to make any policy changes, around 4% of employees surveyed said they would quit their jobs, while 42% said they would look for another job with more flexible work arrangements.
